I absolutely despise when a director makes an incredibly amazing film. But just a year later, they always follow up with some horrible, wretched sequel. Just for the money.
Except for three films!
Three films that anyone can honestly say is better than the first.
And you know why they were so astonishingly great?
- The Godfather II
- The Empire Strikes Back
- The Dark Knight
Each one of these films have been praised to be masterpieces. Which is the exact way to describe them. Not because of graphics or special effects, which all did have and were amazing. But because of the story, the plot! Most films nowadays rely on 3-D or CGI to be “great.” (Avatar. Which I’ve never, nor will I ever see it.) Instead, these three relied on great acting, a great plot, and great arks. And also, each one has a historical ending that still shocks the audience.
You know how supposedly demons can possess people and do crazy things?
Well, I’m sure angels possessed Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas (and director, Irvin Kershner. R.I.P.) and Christopher Nolan to make these films.
I refuse to watch any of them. Except maybe the one with Jake Gyllenhaal because Jake Gyllenhaal is pretty fucking awesome. Donnie Darko, enough said. Two out of three of Denzel Washington’s films have been about trains. Denzel is easily one of my favorite actors. On top of that, he’s incredibly unique and talented. But train movies? Seems like Hollywood is having a writer’s block.
Seriously Hollywood? That’s the best you can come up with? That’s what you’re willing to give millions of dollars to for production costs? Ohh. Okay! Let me guess. We have a train, it’s of the control. Neither the conductor or the riders can stop the impending doom. Lots and lots of explosions! Crappy plot. One academy award winning or nominated actor or actress you paid millions to star in. You anticipate the film to the public by showing the best scenes in commercials. Which by doing so, you essentially kill the reason of attraction to the film, but people are stupid, so it doesn’t matter. Ending with a cheesy scene of either the train blowing up or not, with the main star surviving the major threat of the film or possibly dying (but for a good cost) with the camera zooming out of the possible wreckage or saved train and then zooming into the sky with a fading black screen. And lastly showing, “Directed by ________”.
Why am I not a director? With all the dozens of films that have been made in the last three years alone, only about twenty, give or take, are actually great. That’s a fact.

Well, I’m telling you anyways.
Because I now have all six Harry Potter films in it.
And a lot more films, but I have been procrastinating when it came to the Potter films only cause they’re so long and take forever to convert.
But finally I can watch all six on a four inch screen…
This has no great importance, but I feel good about it.
With Halloween just around the corner.
I’m not usually negative. Not that I’m saying I’m going to be in this post. But I am a realist. With that said, Hollywood is known for making films, actors and life seem timeless. When you watch films like The Godfather, you see Al Pacino at such a young, but recognizable age and usually don’t wonder that the film is almost 38 years old. Or when you see films like The Breakfast Club and you’re still waiting for a sequel to be made to see if they’re still friends on Monday, even though it’s been 25 years since its release. Now that I’ve gotten my point across that films make us forget about time. I want to note out three great actors, directors and producers we all know. And if you don’t, then stop reading this, how dare you not know!
Moving on! Here we go. These three actors have made films that have changed the film industry. And forever have craved their name in Hollywood History. We’ve all seen films like The Good, The Bad and The Ugly or One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest or The Shawshank Redemption. Dirty Harry, The Shining or Driving Miss Daisy. Or other films like Gran Torino or the Departed or Bruce Almighty/Even Almighty. In every one of these films these actors played their roles with such deliverance that I can not even imagine anyone else playing the role. Now I’ve been typing away for over two paragraphs and I still haven’t gotten to the reason I’m making this post or even the people’s names I’m taking about. But I’m pretty sure you might have a guess.
Clint Eastwood. Jack Nicholson. Morgan Freeman.
Three of the most iconic actors in past and recent film history. They’ve been making films when Classics for us were Friday Night Premieres for them.
Now I can go into the history of each of them, but that’s not the point. What I want to make clear is that these men have been craved in films. We see them only in films. And we think that’s them. Young and alive. Truth of the matter is, each one of them is over 70 years of age. Clint is 80! And both Jack and Morgan are 73.These men are old. Sounds disrespectful to say, but it’s truth. Though, they only seem to age one years worth for every ten!
(Now, you always hear people cry and mourn and say how well they respect an actor after they passed, but rarely do you see it when they’re alive. Heath Ledger was a great actor. Of course he wasn’t this huge movie god, but still his films were unique with him in a role. I could not imagine someone else in 10 things I hate about you or The Patriot or (of course) The Dark Knight. We all acknowledge their work, but no one gives it that posthumous respect that it should have gotten when they’re still alive.)
Hopefully you’ve gotten the point of this post. Actors may live forever in the films they’ve made classical for us. But time catches up with Hollywood. And if the time of these men that I look up to so greatly comes before any of us want it to, then;
Mr. Eastwood, Mr. Nicholson and Mr. Morgan, if you’re reading this (even though I have a better chance of having a snowball stay frozen in Hell) Thank you for dedicating, enjoying and sharing your life to the films you make and to the millions of people who cherish that very fact.

I can literally watch both those films back to back to back to back to back to back to back.
Nowadays films have been praised for their incredible effects and the annoying overuse of “IN 3D!!!”. Almost every current film uses these common effects. But, I’m not a huge fan of explosions to win me over solely for a film. Or knowing that the scene everyone finds so real was shot in a blue or green screen or merely CGI. Now, I am a fan of impossible shots. (Which have always been amazing.) But just don’t over do it. And 3D (in my opinion) is just an excuse. Think about it, any film you’ve seen in 3D, now take it away. Mediocre, basically. This ties into all films, all genres, whether it be from huge film productions or a Sundance film. Some films are still great with all this, but most? No.
What happened to films that relied on great acting, amazing stories and incredible directing?

What happened to those Disney Classics we all watched as kids? Nowadays? Looks like every animated film seems.. stupid. The Classics never die though.
Alice in Wonderland. 1951.
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. 1977.
The Little Mermaid. 1989.
The Lion King. 1994.
Lilo and Stitch. 2002.
Hell, even horror films haven’t been scary in years. Once again. The Classics. Be warned, it gets a little scary from here.. to prove my point.

The Exorcist, 1973.
(Pretty much from being to end, this film has been the ultimate scary film. Been used to prank thousands, possibly millions in the maze game. And a face only a mother can love. Linda Blair seen here in the scene where her body levitates of the bed.)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 1974.
(Many cheesy remakes have been made since, but it’s the original one that is special for a couple of reasons. Insanity, originality and simplicity. Doesn’t use extreme effects due to a low budget, but the simple sound of the chainsaw was enough. Or the gruesome scene seen below. Pam (Teri McMinn) is impaled onto a hook by Leatherface.)
(The film that made more people stay clear away from beaches than the BP oil spill. Never was there a film where an animal was used as the villian in such an amazing way. Credited to be so great, of course, ‘cause of Steven Spielberg. As the director himself, pure genius. Here we see Quint (Robert Shaw) who slid right into the Shark’s mouth and is eventually eaten alive.)
(Personally, one of my all-time favorites. Once again, a low budget film. But the thing about low budget films is that since money is tight, the film is forced to use the reality card more. Basically, simple but effective scenes. The film is praised for its incredible use of the “Jump Scare” effect and using the psychological/suspense effect without getting overused or plain. Like in the scene below; Laurie Strode a.k.a. Laurie Myers (Jamie Lee Curtis) hides in terror from Micheal Myers (Tony Moran) as he secretly hides in the shadows.)
(No one thinks twice when you see that white snow with the annoying noise on their television. But this film made the simplest of things into a “Pull a blanket over your head.” Directed by Toby Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and (uncredited) Steven Spielberg. Scene below; Carol Anne Freeling (Heather O’Rourke) looking into the television. See the film and it’ll be even more self-explanatory.)
Silence of the Lambs, 1991.
(Hannibal Lector (Anthony Hopkins) made this film. Why so important? He was only in it for a total of 16 minutes and still won the Oscar for Best Actor! He plays, for lack of better words, a cannibalistic serial killer. Another creepy thing, Hannibal Lector has never blinked. Ever.)
The Blair Witch Project, 1999.
(Showing that films don’t always come from huge Hollywood production companies or masterminded directors. Anyone with a great enough idea can make a film. Thus Blair Witch. Famously known to look like a documentary with amateur footage, it scared millions. Said to be possible more frightening than The Exorcist. In the final scenes; Michael C. Williams starring coldly at the wall. Once again, watch the film and it’ll be more than self-explanatory.)
The Devil’s Rejects, 2005.
(Now, the reason this film works so great is one reason. Helplessness. Crafted by the mind of Rob Zombie, he mastered the film to have the feeling of having no control over your life. And very rare is it for the sequel to be the better film than the first. But it plays out well. Here we see Baby Firefly (Sheri Moon Zombie) Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) and Otis B. Driftwood (Bill Moseley) before their last run in with law.)
Bonus; The Dark Knight, 2008.
(Now, I know that The Dark Knight had numerous explosions and CGI and special effects, ect. etc. But would you say that that’s the reason why the film is so greatly praised and incredibly amazing? No. You would say the acting. The directing. The story. The Joker. When Heath Ledger was announced to play The Joker, no one would have predicted the talent and stunning visualization at how dead on, if not, improved the portrayal of The Joker! The laugh, the wardrobe, the angry, the serious playfulness, the anarchy and most famous, the eerily smile with the recognizable scars we all love now. Sadly, Heath passed away before the film was released, but his name, acting and memory was forever respected by all when we saw The Dark Knight. And even after his passing won his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.)
Now, I know I contradict myself in this post with films like Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, The Titanic, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Dark Night as they’re famously known for having such great effects, but if you have to ask that. Then clearly, you didn’t get my message in this post. Sure, those films use special effects, but the also have great acting and amazing stories. The difference is that, though they have effects, it’s not the effects that make the film. Films have seem to lost that touch with us. That feeling when you’re watching it, you can relate, you feel familiar with it. You can place yourself into the character’s shoes and play the part yourself. You feel that comfort from it. Now, once again, I’m not saying all films have lost this, but most? Plain and simple, yes. Films back in the 1930’s during The Great Depression were praised by people, ‘cause they could related to them, but at the same time can escape into a realistic fantasy world. Somewhere that can possible exist. Now, you can’t go into most films nowadays and say that. Though, it would be amazing to think of such a concept. But in my opinion, films should always have that ark we feel can be real, even though they’re just mere amazing stories of fiction. Of course, though. Every once in a while a film with explosions and super heroes and 3D with incredible CGI with stunning special effects is still a great film to watch, connect with, and hope you can have a dream as epic as the film itself. :)
